Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Trauma in its many forms is a recurring subject in literature — whether individual childhood traumas or collective traumatic experiences such as genocides or natural disasters. Following theorists like Cathy Caruth or Anne Whitehead, literature can even be considered a privileged site for the representation of trauma. Yet in negotiating trauma, literary texts also negotiate how we deal with it. They show how people are shaped throughout their lives by traumatic events — and how this shaping can extend even to their children and grandchildren, under the keyword "transgenerational trauma." But they also show how people come to terms with what they have experienced: the concrete coping strategies they employ, and the ways in which they show resilience. In this seminar, we will engage with different forms of trauma and resilience. The focus lies on preparing for the written seminar paper, which we will develop step by step together. The seminar is aimed at all students who have never before written an academic paper at university, as well as those who would like to review and reaffirm their approach.
