Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course introduces students to Ge'ez (Classical Ethiopic). The phonology, morphology, grammar, and basic core vocabulary of the language will be covered in detail. Students will also learn the "fidal" script in which Ge'ez is written. Over the course of the semester, excerpts from authentic texts in Ge'ez will be introduced. The textbook used in this course is Stephan Prochazka's "Altäthiopische Studiengrammatik".

For the first 3/4 of the semester, students will have written homework assignments which must be submitted to the instructor in the following class. Towards the end of the semester, as we deal more with reading texts in Ge'ez, homework will focus on translating Ge'ez texts, which we will read together as a group in the following class. Written translations of Ge'ez texts need not be submitted to the instructor but will still be accepted if you desire more detailed feedback.

Assessment and permitted materials

At the end of the semester, students will be given an in-class exam. This exam will consist of a series of sentences in Ge'ez which are to be translated. Although a supplementary word-list will be provided, it is permissible to use any dictionaries or grammars, as well as any power-points from class. More information on the exam will be given towards the end of the semester.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The end goal of this course is basic competence in Ge'ez and the ability to translate simple texts with the help of the dictionary.

Grading will be based on in-class participation and performance in the presentation and final exam. The final exam will account for 25% of the grade for the course.

The grading system is as follows:
5 (0-52): not enough (not keeping up with the homework, homework full of mistakes, poor performance in class and/or on the final exam)
4 (53-65): enough (occasionally turning in the homework, homework and performance in in-class participation and on the final exam indicates some knowledge of the subject, but with much room for improvement)
3 (66-77): satisfactory (keeping up with the homework but without retaining information, homework and/or final exam passable but still not that great)
2 (78-90): good (keeping up with the homework, homework and/or final exam could be improved in terms of certain details but otherwise okay)
1 (91-100): very good (keeping up with the homework, homework and/or final exam has only minor errors, if any)
