Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Seminary on the real beginning of Arabic geographical literature, represented by three authors during the 4th / 10th century, who added maps to their works (therefore "Islam-Atlas").

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular active cooperation and contributions, continous preparation, reading, translation and interpretation of Arabic texts, term paper concerning Arabic geographers of the early period.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Regular participation (absence at most three times), regular active cooperation and contributions, term paper. Relation of term paper : contributions 10 : 90.

Examination topics

Apart from reading, translation and interpretation of particular Arabic passages: term paper.

Reading list

Texts: al-Istakhri, Kitab al-masalik wa-l-mamalik; Ibn Hawqal, Kitab surat al-ard; al-Muqaddasi, Ahsan at-taqasim fi ma`rifat al-aqalim. Secondary literature on the genre will we dealt with during the sessions.
