Aims, contents and method of the course

The course will deal with a selection of Old Babylonian letters written in Akkadian. The course's aim is to improve the students' knowledge of Akkadian grammar and of the cuneiform script and to introduce them to Old Babylonian archival texts.
Method: students are expected to attend the class (Anwesenheitspflicht).

Assessment and permitted materials

The texts will be read in class; students are required to prepare for this; in addition, they will give short presentations on pertinent topics (Edition and commentary of an Old Babylonian letter). On midterm an assessment of the students' progress will take place (translation of extracts from Old Babylonian letters that have been read in class)
COVID-19: depending on the situation, the written midterm assessment might be substituted by other forms of learning assessment, such as individual oral exams.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

40% of the evaluation will depend on the quality of the indivual preparation of the texts (transliteration, translation, grammatical analysis); 30% will depend on the degree and quality of the individual participation in class discussions; 20% will depend on the quality of a short individual presentation on a pertinent topic; 10% will depend on a midterm assessment of the individual progress.

Examination topics

Paleography and questions of Akkadian grammar will represent the focus of the discussion.
