Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is designed to introduce to students the basic principles of Syriac, a Northwest Semitic language belonging to the broader group of Aramaic. Students should come out of this course with a basic knowledge of this language, including grammar, syntax, morphology, and lexicon, including an ability toread basic Syriac.

Assessment and permitted materials

At the end of the semester (Thursday, 29 January 2026), we will have an in-class exam, consisting of the translation of a short text in Syriac. This exam is open-book, meaning that use of all notes, dictionaries, etc., is permitted.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The grading system is as follows:

5) 0-52: not enough (not keeping up with the homework, homework full of mistakes, poor performance in class and/or on the final exam)
4) 53-65: enough (occasionally turning in the homework, homework and performance in in-class participation and on the final exam indicates some knowledge of the subject, but with much room for improvement)
3) 66-77: satisfactory (keeping up with the homework but without retaining information, homework and/or final exam passable but still not that great)
2) 78-90: good (keeping up with the homework, homework and/or final exam could be improved in terms of certain details but otherwise okay)
1) 91-100: very good (keeping up with the homework, homework and/or final exam has only minor errors, if any)

Students who score a 5 will not pass the course.

Examination topics

Reading list

In addition to the PowerPoints from the in-class lectures, which will be uploaded to Moodle, we will be using the textbook "Robinson's Paradigms and Exercises in Syriac Grammar", by J. F. Coakley, a PDF of which will be uploaded to Moodle at the beginning of the semester.
