Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This semester, selected chapters from the Oral Instruction Tantra of the Four Tantras of Tibetan Medicine (Rgyud bzhi), the most important text of Tibetan medicine, will be introduced and discussed in detail.
The Rgyud bzhi, whose full title may be translated as “The Secret Quintessential Instruction on the Eight Branches of the Science of Medicine,” has served as the foundational text of Tibetan medicine since the 12th century and is still largely memorized by students training to become Tibetan physicians today. Through an analysis of the opening chapters of the Oral Instruction Tantra, participants will gain a comprehensive insight into the classification of diseases, the practical application of diagnostic methods, and the therapeutic aspects of Tibetan medicine.
As course material, a German translation of Chapters 1–27 of the Oral Instruction Tantra (Das Tantra der mündlichen Überlieferung der vier Tantras der Tibetischen Medizin, 1. Teil) is available in the reference collection of the library of the Institute for South Asian, Tibetan and Buddhist Studies.
