Nach einer allgemeinen Einführung und einem historischen Überblick über die Entwicklung des Mahāyāna in Indien, werden die beiden Hauptschulen Madhyamaka und Yogācāra vorgestellt. Dabei soll auch auf die sog. Buddhanatur (Tathāgatagarbha-)Lehre eingegangen werden, die mitunter auch als dritte Mahāyāna-Schule angesehen wird.
