For a passing grade, you may not miss class more than three times. Special cases must be discussed with the teacher.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Students will acquire the necessary communicative and intercultural skills to effectively understand, produce, and use Modern Standard Chinese ("Mandarin") pertaining to the following topics: Introducing oneself and others; greetings; age and animal signs; nationality and hometown; describing a person (physical appearance and personality); family and professions; time; schedules.
Productive and receptive knowledge of the romanization system Hanyu Pinyin (students do not need to use Chinese characters to pass this course).
Correct pronunciation of all sounds and tones of Modern Standard Chinese ("Mandarin").
Grammar is always taught as an integrated part of the overall communicative context.

Methods and activities include:
- Reading/Listening to and analysis of dialogues and texts.
- Classroom work; individual work; pair work/group work; role plays.
- Collaborative learning (including digital tools)

Assessment and permitted materials

20%: Participation (homework (on paper and digital); general participation)
20%: Quizzes
30%: Written mid-term exam (Grammar, vocab; text production)
30%: Written final exam (Grammar, vocab; text production)
No aids are permitted in the examination.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

100% – ≤90%: Very good (1)
89% – ≤80%: Good (2)
79% – ≤70%: Satisfactory (3)
69% – ≤60%: Sufficient (4)
59% – 0%: Insufficient (5)
If you miss more than three classes you will receive a negative mark.

Examination topics

All material covered in the class-sessions or as homework and all exercises and material provided on Moodle.
Character reading and character writing is not mandatory to pass this course.
