Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Students will practice the necessary communicative and intercultural skills to effectively understand, produce, and use Modern Standard Chinese ("Mandarin") pertaining to the following topics: Introducing oneself and others; greetings; age and animal signs; nationality and hometown; describing a person (physical appearance and personality); family and professions; time; schedules.
Significant time will be used for practicing the sounds and tones of Modern Standard Chinese, in order to create a sound basis for building oral competence in Chinese (students do not need to use Chinese characters to pass this course).
Class time will also be set aside to discuss current societal, political, and cultural issues and developments in the Chinese speaking world.

Methods and activities include:
- Oral interaction: classroom work; pair work/group work; role plays; guided dialogues
- Collaborative learning (including digital tools)
- Automatization of high-frequency patterns and phrases
- Practicing listening skills

Assessment and permitted materials

20%: Participation (homework; in-class)
20%: Oral presentation
30%: Oral mid-term exam
30%: Oral final exam
No aids are permitted in the examination.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

100% – ≤90%: Very good (1)
89% – ≤80%: Good (2)
79% – ≤70%: Satisfactory (3)
69% – ≤60%: Sufficient (4)
59% – 0%: Insufficient (5)
If you miss more than three classes you will receive a negative mark.

Character reading and character writing is not mandatory to pass this course.
