Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course introduces the basic Chinese characters used in everyday contexts. Students will learn to read simple texts, write common expressions, and understand basic sentence structures. Instruction also includes techniques for digital character input (e.g., typing with Pinyin). The course combines guided introduction, class exercises, and individual reading/writing practice.

Assessment and permitted materials

The course is assessed through continuous performance and a final written exam. The final exam consists of a reading comprehension section and a writing section. No aids are permitted during the exam. You will receive detailed information about the exam format during the semester.

Class Participation & Attendance: 10%
Quiz: 10%
Homework Assignments: 10%
Midterm Exam: 30%
Final Exam: 40%

To pass the course, students may not miss more than three sessions and must pass the final exam.

Grading scale:

100-90% = Very Good (1)
89.9-80.0% = Good (2)
79.9-70.0% = Satisfactory (3)
69.9-60.0% = Sufficient (4)
< 59.9% = Not Enough / Failed

Examination topics

All examination topics will be related to the materials covered in class, including vocabulary, sentence structures, and exercises provided on Moodle. Students are expected to preview the vocabulary weekly.
