Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

We are unable to foresee the specific Covid-related regulations in the summer term, but for now we assume that this course will be taught in presence. Please note that in order to be able to attend, you need to be in Vienna, and you must fulfill the related requirements concerning vaccination, masks etc. Please keep yourself updated via the UniVie website.
There is a possibility that we will be forced to return to online teaching at some point. Please ensure that you have the necessary hardware, software, and internet access to be able to participate.

Contents
Reflecting our integrated teaching and learning concept, this course includes the building of theoretical knowledge as well as its application to specific cases in East Asia in a comparative way.
First, students get to know some of the key theories of economic development including the East Asian Development Model.
Secondly, students will form teams and jointly work on a number of theoretical and empirical issues related to economic development (more details on Moodle). This will be done comparatively, looking at three countries of Northeast Asia: Japan, South Korea, and the PR China.
Students master the fundamental ideas of various key theories of economic development; in particular classical/neoclassical, Marxist, Keynesian and dependency theory, dirigisme, structuralism, and neoliberalism. They understand the developmental paths of the individual East Asian countries both from a general perspective and with regard to their particularities, and are able to conduct comparative, method-based country case analyses and to apply the acquired knowledge to contemporary developments in the region.

Assessment and permitted materials

Workload
Students will be asked to read throughout the semester; for details, see Moodle. This will create a foundation for active discussion during the seminar. Expect reading at least about 40 pages per week on average.
Each student will have to take part in a multiple-choice test on the theories of economic development. More details on this assignment will be provided during class and on Moodle.
Furthermore, each student is required to actively contribute to team presentations. This includes recorded PPT presentations. More details on the assignments will be provided during class and on Moodle.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Assessment
(1) M/C test on the theories of economic development: The test will cover what has been discussed during the first four classes (classical, neoclassical, and heterodox theories of development, EAD model). Please note: This is not a lecture course (“Vorlesung”). Tests will thus not be repeated. They will also not be substituted by other contributions. Please make sure that you can participate. If you already know that this will not be possible, you should not register for this course. If you miss the test, for whatever reason, you will be graded “5” for that test. Please consider this when enrolling for this course. Please note that the M/C test must be passed to pass the whole course; it qualifies as a “Mindestanforderung”.
(2) Team presentations: All members of the team will receive the same grade, notwithstanding their individual contribution or their performance during the presentation. So make sure to organize your work well and according to the individual strengths of the team members.
The final grade for the course will be calculated as follows:
M/C test (must be passed to pass the whole course): 46%
Team presentations: 9% each (6 x 9% = 54%)

Examination topics

see above
Registration
You have registered via the electronic registration system of the University of Vienna. This registration, combined with participation in at least one session is commensurate to a legally binding registration for examination. In other words, you will be graded. Of course we understand that in the first weeks of the semester, plans can change. Thus, deregistration for this course will be possible until 23:59 on March 25, 2022. After that date, deregistration will not be accepted.
