Mit der zunehmenden Fragmentierung des Begriffs des „Ich“ bzw. des „Selbst“ in der Postmoderne (Hall 1996) hat sich auch das Verständnis der Beziehungen zwischen Musik, Ort und Identität weiter ausdifferenziert (Reily und Brucher 2018). Entsprechend haben Ethnomusikolog*innen ihr Forschungsfeld auf Themen wie Diasporaerfahrungen (z. B. Diehl 2002; Silverman 2012), ländlich-städtische Dynamiken (z. B. Turino 1993; Romero 1993), musikalische Szenen (z. B. Mendívil und Spencer Espinoza 2016; Schoop 2017) sowie mobile musikalische Praktiken (z. B. Ashkenazi 1993; Bakan 1998; Bull 2000) und virtuelle Räume (Bermudez 2025; Harvey 2014; Lysloff 2003) ausgeweitet. Diese Arbeiten sind häufig sozialkonstruktivistisch geprägt und betonen den fluiden und prozesshaften Charakter von Raum-, Orts- und Identitätskonzepten.
In diesem Seminar werden wir uns diesem Diskursfeld durch ausgewählte Texte zu Raum-, und Ortskonzeptionen, sowie durch die Lektüre einschlägiger Beispiele aus der Ethnomusikologie der letzten 30 Jahre widmen. Als Einstieg empfehle ich die Lektüre von Setha Lows 2017 erschienen Buch Spatializing Culture.
