Aims, contents and method of the course

Transmission, phonology, morphology and syntax of Avestan and Old Persian in the light of selected readings.

Assessment and permitted materials

Evaluation of each and every paper and overall appraisal of the active participation in this course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

(1) Knowledge of the grammars of the Old Iranian languages and their development from Proto-Iranian,
(2) Knowledge of the philological methods to handle Avestan and Old Persian texts successfully, and
(3) Knowledge of the methods of comparative linguistics and (internal) reconstruction in the field of Indo-Iranian studies.

Examination topics

Presentation and interpretation of Old Iranian texts with active collaboration of all participants - Composing and presenting short papers.
