Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture provides a survey of the research field of Applied Linguistics. We introduce and discuss the history of the field, sub-disciplines that are considered to be part of Applied Linguistics as well as their central theories, concepts and methods. A particular focus is placed on those research topics that are specifically dealt with at the Department of Linguistics.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written examination (test with general questions concerning the various topics discussed in the lecture). No materials or tools, except for paper and pencil, are permitted.

PLEASE NOTE: The first exam date has been postponed to May 28 (afternoon) due to COVID-19 prevention measures. Students enrolled for this exam will be informed by email about the exact time and place of the exam on May 27 at the latest. In any case, the exam will take place offline.

The second exam date is scheduled June 17 in the afternoon. Enrolled students will be informed by email about the exact time and place of the exam on June 16 at the latest.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students have an overview of the field of Applied Lingustics, they know relevant sub-disciplines as well as central theories, concepts and methods. They are able to apply those to simple cases.
The exam of this lecture is passed if at least 26 points (out of max. 50) have been reached.

Examination topics

Lecture, extended with discussions in the accompanying tutorial. Detailed handouts and further readings are provided on Moodle.

PLEASE NOTE: During the home-learning phase in the context of COVID-19 protection the oral presentation will be substituted by elaborate scripts which are provided on Moodle. For questions and discussions, a forum has been set up on Moodle.
