Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This continuous assessment course, which consists of two parts (lecture and exercise), provides an in-depth introduction to linguistic theory, which deals with uncovering the nature of mental grammar, which represents the knowledge of the speakers of a language (their so-called language competence). The course is based on Noam Chomsky's Minimalist Program and the Principles and Parameters Framework and serves as basic preparation for advanced courses in the areas of grammar theory and psycholinguistics. Some important topics that are covered are: basic syntactic operations, lexical and functional categories, tree hierarchy and C-command, binding theory, theta theory, case theory, question formation, verb second and logical form.
Students must: (a) attend both parts of the course (i.e. lecture and exercise); (b) come to class prepared (i.e. having worked through the assigned reading and homework); and (c) participate actively in the exercise classes by solving problems assigned and asking and answering (each other's) questions.

Assessment and permitted materials

* Written final exam
* Exercises to be solved independently
* Theoretical analyses and related literature studies
* Active participation during the course units
All homework must be submitted (uploaded on Moodle) on time. The use of aids during the final exam is not permitted. All exercises, tasks, exams, etc. that take place as part of the course count as partial performance.
Compulsory attendance in both parts of the course:
* Lecture part, max. 2 absences
* Exercise part, max. 2 absences

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Part A: 50% (i.e. the exercise part)
30% Homework (inklusive Pflichtlektüre)
20% Class work (e.g. exercises/quizzes, active participation)
Part B: 50% Written exam
To receive a passing grade, students must achieve more than half of the points in both, part A and part B (i.e., A > 50% and B > 50%).
Compulsory attendance in both parts of the course:
* Lecture part, max. 2 absences
* Exercise part, max. 2 absences
Grading schema:
0-50% = negative
51-64% = sufficient
65-77% = satisfactory
78-89% = good
(Above) 90% = very good
