Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This is an interactive seminar course (mixed with small introductory lecturing blocks) for students interested in the research on second language acquisition/bilingualism/ multilingualism investigated from a neuro-linguistic perspective. After short introductions to neurolinguistics, topics in brain imaging and bilingualism, neuro-anatomical
terminology and brain imaging technologies (e.g. EEG, fMRI, DTI), we will discuss recent research papers - from the field of cognitive neuroscience of language - examining the neurobiological basis and cognitive-psychological factors contributing to language processing or/and second language acquisition processes. These papers will also serve as the starting point of the participants individual projects (seminar papers).

Assessment and permitted materials

project presentations (talks), all-class discussions of project presentations, final seminar papers, in class active participation (discussions)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Mindestanforderungen: since this is a "prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung", permanent active participation is required (missing classes restricted to max 2 classes, equaling 180 minutes); active participation meaning partaking actively in class discussions; power point presentation of own project; final written seminar paper.
This course aims at introducing the participants to the scientific subfield cognitive neuroscience of language processing (with main focus on second language processing the multilingual brain), neurolinguistics and
at familiarizing with recent and ongoing research in the field as well as the tools used.

Examination topics

The exam material is the seminar contents and will be elaborated during the ongoing seminar (literature on Moodle (pdfs), mini-lectures, student presentations, group discussions, seminar paper.

Reading list

Students will read the original papers from the neuroliguistics literature.
A list of required (as well as optional) readings will be provided online (Moodle) and in the Handapparat Reiterer in the library.
