Aims, contents and method of the course
The main aim of the course is to introduce students to the basic concepts and methods of empirical research in developmental psycholinguistics. Throughout the course, students will learn how to read and summarize scientific texts, evaluate them constructively, gain insight into experimental methods in developmental psycholinguistics, and practice giving concise but informative presentations. They will be required to generate their own research idea, with the goal of designing experiments they could carry out in the future.In the first part of the semester, students are expected to read, present, and discuss empirical papers. In the second part, they will present their own experimental plans. These presentations will offer a valuable opportunity to receive feedback before submitting their BA thesis, which will consist of an elaborated experimental plan, due towards the end of the semester.The course requires intensive preparation and active participation in every session. Insufficient preparation or lack of engagement in discussions will negatively affect students’ final grades.It is highly recommended that students who lack background knowledge of the experimental method take (or attend) the course 160122 PR Wissenschaftliches Praktikum aus Psycho- und Patholinguistik (2025W). This course complements the seminar and has been carefully designed to introduce the key concepts and principles that the seminar will build upon.
Assessment and permitted materials
Participation in class discussion, questions about the paper discussed: 10/100Presentation of the selected paper: 15/100Presentation of own experimental plan: 25/100End-of-term essay/BA thesis: 50/100
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students are required to read each empirical paper.Each student will prepare a PowerPoint presentation on one (or more) empirical paper(s), depending on the number of participants. The aim of the presentation is (1) to summarize the paper and (2) to present it to the class in a concise yet accurate manner. Papers will be selected by the students during the first class from a list of readings that I will provide. Each presentation must be uploaded to Moodle by the end of Saturday in the week prior to the scheduled presentation. Late submissions will result in a deduction of points.Each student is required to write a seminar paper at the end of the term. Topic: any of the main topics we will discuss in the first part of the semester. Format: experimental plan. It is not expected to carry out an experiment (but it is allowed).Deadline to submit the topic of the experimental plan: 15th of December.On the 12th of January students will present their own experimental plans to the group. Required format: Background (previous research in the topic), Research questions and Hypotheses, Planned methods (independent and dependent variables, planned sample size etc.), Planned statistical analysis, Predicted results, Discussion of the predicted results.Deadline to submit the BA thesis;
For the bachelor's thesis, you may have an opportunity for improvement. To do so, you must submit your bachelor's thesis by 15th of March. If this BA thesis and, therefore, the entire course is negatively assessed, you will receive feedback for successful improvement by 15th of April at the latest. You must make the improvement by 30th of April. If you waive the opportunity for improvement, you must submit the bachelor's thesis by 30th of April at the latest.Length of the paper: 25000-30000 characters (including spaces) in English. Evaluation criteria: integration of core readings, precise and concise style, structure of paper, originality of the experimental idea, quality of cited literature (review of topic-relevant literature and citations are mandatory).

Aims, contents and method of the course
The course focuses on speech production. First, we will work out some theoretical foundations of speech production, empirical research and scientific writing. Moreover, students will discuss empirical papers concerned with the mechanisms of lexical access, writing and its memory-enhancing function, first and second language speech production, speech production disorders and other topics. Students are expected to read scientific papers and present one empirical paper (single or group presentation, depending on the number of participants).Throughout the seminar, participants plan their own speech production experiments and present their experimental plan in class. The experimental plan forms the basis of the BA thesis that students have to submit until April, 15th, 2026.The course will require intensive preparation and active participation from the students in each block. Lack of preparation and participation in the discussions will lead to lower grades.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students are required to read each empirical paper.Each student should prepare a powerpoint presentation of one empirical paper. Papers will be distributed via Moodle in the first weeks of October. Each presentation must be sent to the lecturer by email during the week of presentation, until the end of Monday.In the two last sessions in January, students present their own experimental plans to the group.
Required format: Background (previous research in the topic), research questions and hypotheses, planned methods (independent and dependent variables, planned sample size), planned statistical analysis, predicted results, discussion of the predicted results. Alternatively, students can actually conduct the planned experiment and report the results in the BA thesis.Each student is required to write a seminar paper at the end of the term. Any topic from the speech production seminar can be chosen. The thesis is based on the experimental plan presented in class.
Length of the paper: 25000-30000 characters. Evaluation criteria: integration of core readings, precise and concise style, originality of the experimental idea, quality of cited literature (review of topic-relevant literature and citations are mandatory).If the bachelor thesis receives a negative grade, a positive course grade is not possible.You will be given the opportunity to improve your bachelor thesis. To do so, you must submit it via Moodle by March 1, 2026. If the bachelor thesis and, thus, the entire course is negative, you will receive feedback with criteria for successful improvement by April 1, 2026, at the latest. You must submit the improvement by April 30, 2026. If you decide not to take advantage of the opportunity to improve, submit the bachelor thesis via Moodle by April 30, 2026, at the latest.
