Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is planned to present an overview and in-depth discussion of a special field in language and cognition. In the first session it will be decided which field it will be. The instructor will suggest language production, inner speech, neuroscience of language learning or an area of (experimental) pragmatics. After two introductory sessions we will discuss classic and hot topics of the chosen field. The aim is to develop and train the student's ability to critically read and evaluate empirical work in the language sciences and relate empirical findings to models and theories in the field. Students will train this ability by weekly reading tasks, obligatory oral presentations, active participation and a written term paper on a topic of the seminar.

Assessment and permitted materials

Student progress will be evaluated by three measures:
1. Term paper (~6000 words). The term paper will enable the student to explore a topic of his/her choice in greater depth. Students will be free to write term papers in either German or English. (50%)
2. active participation including weekly reading assignments and submission of comments/questions (20%)
3. in class presentation of a paper/topic in one of the seminar sessions (30%)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

All three measures for evaluation have to be graded at least with 4. In case either term paper, active participation or class presentation is missing altogether the course will count as failed.
