Aims, contents and method of the course

Zwischen 1942 und 1946 schuf Val Lewton als Produzent für das Hollywoodstudio RKO eine Reihe von kleinen, poetischen, beunruhigenden, melancholisch-düsteren, ja geradezu todessehnsüchtigen Filmen im Zwischenreich von Traumphantasie, Horrorfilm und Film Noir: Cat People (1942), I Walked with a Zombie (1943) und The Leopard Man (1943), alle inszeniert von Jacques Tourneur, zählen hier ebenso dazu wie The Seventh Victim (Mark Robson, 1943) und The Curse of the Cat People (1944, Robert Wise, Gunther von Fritsch). Dieses ist Kino höchster Intensität, das seine Kraft nicht billigen Effekten, Monstern oder Ungeheuern verdankt, sondern allen Schattierungen subtilen Terrors, Leerstellen und bedrohlicher Objektwelt, raffinierten Modulationen von Sound und Schwarzweißphotographie. Was in diesen Filmen erzählt wird, tritt zurück hinter dem, wie es erzählt wird; narrative Logik weicht zunehmend der desorientierenden Energie, die von der alptraumhaften urbanen Atmosphäre ausgeht. "World War II haunts the horror films of Val Lewton", schreibt Alexander Nemerov. Und sie können als humanistische (und subversive) Kritik an oppressiven patriarchalischen Strukturen gelesen werden. Die Lehrveranstaltung wird all diesen Spuren nachgehen, Lewtons Filme diskutieren und analysieren.
