Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This seminar addresses the question whether and how phenomenological analyses of time-consciousness can contribute to the debate on the nature of self-consciousness. The following aspects and questions will be in focus: What does it mean to be conscious of oneself? What is the common ground of all different kinds of self-consciousness? What are important aspects and dimensions of different kinds of self-consciousness? What is the relationship between self-consciousness and consciousness: is self-consciousness a necessary feature of any consciousness whatsoever? What is the primary form of self-consciousness on which any knowledge of oneself rests? Is primary self-consciousness only possible by reflection or is it a pre-reflective structure? Or is a structural explanation of self-consciousness not possible in the first place?
Accompanying a comprehensive lecture of Husserl's time-analyses with a focus on self-consciousness, the selected texts of the Heidelberg School (e.g. Henrich, Frank), current analytical philosophy (e.g. Kriegel, Hutto) and phenomenology (e.g. Zahavi) will be read.

Assessment and permitted materials

For a positive grade, attendance, participation in discussions of the texts, and writing of short reflections (around 600-800 words) during the semester are necessary requirements (30 % of the grade). Moreover, grades will be based on a seminar paper (around 6000 words) students are expected to write at the end of the semester (70 % of the grade).
