Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This proseminar will present three of the most significant philosophical theories on space:
the space, place and body theory of Aristoteles lectured in his book on Physics
the theory of space in Kants Kritik of Pure Reason, where it becomes an apriori form of intuition
the space and body-theory presented by Jean-Luc Nancy in his text CORPUS, in which it becomes an attribute of bodies.

Assessment and permitted materials

Collaboration and presence in the proseminar (30 %), oral presentation (30 %), written paper (40 %)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The proseminar follows three main aims:
it intends to be an introduction into the Philosophy of Nature
it wants to indrocue you into the ancient greek concept of PHYSIS. In presocratic times PHYSIS means something like the be-coming of the cosmos in itself, out of itself. It was a synonym for being (be-coming) at those times
finally it is the aim of this seminar to introduce you in contemporary theories on the relation of space, place and bodies.

Examination topics

close reading: slow reading, interpretation and discussion of the relevant texts of Aristotles, Kant and Nancy:
Aristoteles, Physics, in particular the books 3. and 4.
Kant, Immanuel, in particular his concept of a "transcendental aesthetic" carried out mainly in his Critique of Pure Reason and his Opus Postumum
Nancy, Jean-Luc, in particular the last capter "On the Soul" in his text CORPUS

Reading list

Aristoteles: Physik. Übersetzt, mit einer Einleitung und mit Anmerkungen herausgegeben von Hans Günter Zekl. Felix Meiner Verlag: Hamburg 1988.
Kant, Immanuel: Kritik der reinen Vernunft, Felix Meiner Verlag: Hamburg 1976.
