Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is a Master’s level lecture course on ethics of technology. The course is divided into three thematic modules: privacy, attention, and agency. We will spend 4-3 weeks on each theme. Selected readings range from introductory texts (e.g. Nyholm 2024) to theoretical explorations of the three core themes (e.g. Rachels 1975).

No prior experience in ethics of technology is required; some prior experience in moral philosophy (e.g. MA Topics in Practical Philosophy) will be helpful, but is not strictly required.

Assessment and permitted materials

This course has continuous assessment (KU), meaning that there is no final examination.
Attendance and participation in class is required. (10%)
If you must be absent from class, email me in advance.
Do not come to class if you are not feeling well.

The course has three major assignments:
Presentation: Students will present readings for the session in class and lead a seminar discussion on an agreed upon date. (20%)
Reading responses: Students will submit a brief written response to the assigned reading(s). Due weekly. (20%)
Term paper: Students will complete a final term paper on a topic relevant to the class. (50%)
Failure to complete any assignment, or repeated failure to attend class without excuse, will result in a failing grade.
