Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In recent times, the concept of cooperation has become the focus of research on the relation between humans and other animals. Most famously, Michael Tomasello claims that humans are distinct from other animals in that they are genuinely cooperative-minded, whereas social behavior of other animals is of a different, not genuinely cooperative kind.
In this research seminar, we examine cooperation and cooperative-mindedness in conceptual and empirical perspective. What does it mean to be cooperative-minded? And can such attitudes be found in other animals, too? This research question leads us to contested phenomena like the alleged inequality aversion in some non-human animals, and to the question of whether or not there are cases of moral behavior in the non-human animal kingdom.
