Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course introduces students to subjectivation and power-theoretical perspectives on sexualities in educational contexts. Drawing on key theoretical contributions-particularly those of Michel Foucault and Judith Butler-students will engage with the idea of sexuality as a product of culture and power. We will explore how sexuality is governed through discourse and how individuals come to govern themselves in relation to normative frameworks.

In the second part of the course, we turn to the analysis of both historical and contemporary materials used in sexuality education - such as advice literature, pedagogical guides, and Q&A sections. Using Foucault’s concept of 'technologies of the self,' students will analyse the forms of subjectivity articulated within these materials. The findings will be presented in class and discussed collectively.
Methods:
- Close reading of theoretical texts
- Group discussions
- Research and analysis of sexuality education materials
- Student presentations of analytical findings
