Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The students learn to understand and analyse educational processes and institutions as a relation between power, knowledge and subjectivation. They learn the theoretical and methodological foundations of discourse analysis in according to M. Foucault and will practise to conduct critical discourse analysis in the seminar using the example of a jointly selected research topic. They will learn which research questions can be answered with the method, how the material corpus is limited and put together and how concrete analysis steps are realised.

Assessment and permitted materials

Reading and participation in the seminar is obligatory. In the seminar, students will plan their own small research concept in small groups and conduct exemplary analyses. There may also be homework for this. The research concept and the exemplary implementation will be presented and discussed in the seminar and finally submitted in written form as a seminar paper.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participation and text reading: 20%
Presentation: 30%
Seminar paper: 50%
All sections must be completed positively.

Examination topics

The examination includes text-reading, oral participation, planning and exemplary conduction of a discourse-analytical research project and presentation of the research project.

The exact literature will be announced at the beginning of the seminar. It is best to already get a copy of the Introduction to Critical Discourse Analysis by Siegfried Jäger before the seminar begins.
