Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This reading course builds on the topics covered by the lecture “Internationale Politik” in order to provide an introduction to some of the intersections between political economy and socioecological issues in the Latin American context. The course is taught in English.

The first few sessions of the course discuss the intro literature to IR Theory. Then, some contemporary issues in the LA context will be raised and discussed from an IR perspective, with emphasis in analytical tools provided by political economy and political ecology perspectives. Students will have the chance to familiarize themselves with issues related to the “civilizatory crisis” (“Crisis civilizatoria”) (E. Lander) in Latin America, including the contradictions of (neo-) extractivism, socio-ecological and territorial inequalities that often involves persistent patterns of conflict and violence.

The students are provided with interdisciplinary tools in order to develop a critical analytical understanding of IR in concrete contexts. By the end of the semester students should be familiar with the basic theories and concepts of International Politics and be able to critically apply them to a Latin American context.

The sessions of the course will draw on the student’s analytical contributions, by way of short input presentations and participation in the discussions. During the semester, there will be homework on the texts, a presentation and a short written essay. This essay can either focus on a theoretical research question or an empirical case related to the focus of this reading course.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students are expected to be present at all sessions. The evaluation for the course consists of reading/homework (60 percent) and a final essay (40 percent) to be submitted after the course.

The homework during the course consists of the following:

- answers to questions provided about specific texts to be uploaded on Moodle prior to the seminar on a regular basis
- 1 input presentation on one of the texts aimed at opening the discussion afterwards.
- 3 surprise quizzes about the readings for specific sessions. Students have to pass at least 2 of them.

The short essay about a topic/research question relevant to the course has an extension of 2.000 to 2.500 words.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students are expected to be present in all sessions. More than 2 unexcused missed sessions will result in an automatic fail (5). All students are expected to read the texts and to participate in the discussions in class.

The homework and the essay must be written in English and submitted on time. Any delay can result in a lowering of the grade (-0.3 which each passing day) or a failing grade (5) in the case of the homework on the sessions.

The final grade will be assigned according to the following
- Essay (40 percent)
- Answers to questions (15 percent)
- Input presentation (30 percent)
- 3 surprise quizzes (15 percent)

Examination topics

Es handelt sich um eine prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung.
