Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar deals with memes as a form of political communication in digital public spheres. Humorous memes, which combine visual and text elements and are appropriated, adapted and shared by users in social networks, have also become the subject of social science research in recent years. They enable participation in a polyphonic, sometimes controversial political discourse that can go beyond the thematic focus of traditional mass media. Recent studies (e.g. Shifman 2013, Ross/Rivers 2018, Mina 2019) deal, for example, with the significance of memes in political movements, in election campaigns or in the production of ad-hoc publics. Based on the discussion of basic texts, the seminar teaches methodological and theoretical competencies for the classification of memes and introduces students to the possibilities of their analysis.

Assessment and permitted materials

The assessment is based on three tasks to be completed in the course of the semester (90% of the grade). Regular and active participation (especially text reading and readiness for discussion) is a prerequisite and is included in the assessment at a rate of 10%. Two missed seminar units will be tolerated.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For a positive assessment, all tasks must be completed with at least 51 points:

Task 1 (reading project): Presentation on a basic text from the accompanying reader and on two other independently researched Journal Articles on the topic of the basic text (group task, 20% of grade);

Task 2 (research project): Submission of a written analysis of a case study (individual or group task, 50% of grade);

Task 3 (presentation): Short oral presentation of the analysis from task 2 in plenary (single or group task, 20% of grade);

Regular and active participation in the seminar is assumed and is included in the assessment (10% of grade).

A detailed description of the three tasks can be found in the syllabus, which is handed out in the first unit and will be available on the MOODLE learning platform.

Examination topics

Beim Seminar handelt es sich um eine prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung (siehe Leistungskontrolle, Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab).
