Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is dedicated to the specific use of prognostic models in the social sciences. Its main objective is to improve participants’ understanding of the evolution of population-based processes. Using examples from R and Excel, participants will first learn common data visualisation techniques that will prove helpful during the remainder of the course. Next, different prognostic techniques and their applications will be introduced. An essential component of the class will be on scenario development, which is key for any meaningful future prognosis.

Assessment and permitted materials

1. Demographic country profile (30%); to be presented in class and submitted as a written report. Participants can choose any country except their country of origin. Depending on the number of participants, groups of up to three people may be possible.

2. Population projections by age and sex; to be submitted as either an executable R code or an Excel/VBA macro (50%). The goal of this task is to roughly replicate the results according to the UN World Population Prospects.

3. Classroom participation (20%).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participation is obligatory. Students may miss at most one class.

Grades will be based on the three exercises (presentation, country profile, Excel/VBA macro or R code)

All three exercises must be completed.
