Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Debates in academia, media, and policy circles frequently invoke 'the market' as a powerful entity with its own logic, be it in the form of a civilizing force or as a destructive actor. This course will ask the question 'what is a market' and thereby introduce students to classic and pivotal readings in economic sociology.

We will explore debates surrounding the nature of markets; optimistic and pessimistic readings of market society; as well as the relations of markets, states, planning, and social movements.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students are asked to actively participate in discussions, present one of the texts and write a brief assignment after the end of the class.
The class will take place in the form of a Blockkurs.
