Aims, contents and method of the course
In this course, students will be introduced to the central scientific debates regarding the ethical dimension and implications of anthropological research and knowledge production practices. Thus, students will develop a critical understanding of the need of reflexive thinking, positionality, and ethical concerns that must be present throughout research stages. With a focus on feminists, decolonial, and anti-racists debates, students will be able to understand the critical and political dimensions of anthropological knowledge production practices.After course ends, the students will have the abilities to formulate the first concept regarding ethics and reflexivity for their master's thesis project.
Assessment and permitted materials
The course is intended as a space for debate that arises from the careful reading of the material required for each week. Each session consists of a). Discussion of the literature, b). Presentation of a case study, c). class exercises. To enhance discussions, students are to present the literature meant for each session.Students will submit one essay on the topics discussed in class.Likewise, each student must handout an individually selected seminar paper on the topic of the course.Assessment and permitted materials:
For a positive completion of the course, the students must provide the following partial achievements:Presentation of the literature will be assessed, and it will correspond to 25 points.
Written document on the ethical consideration, and positionality for the Master’s

Was bedeuten Positionalität und Reflexivität?
Ist das Verhältnis von Forschenden und Beforschten (immer) hierarchisch?!Anhand von konkreten Beispielen sollen o a Fragen diskutiert werden. Weiters soll reflektiert werden, wo die Möglichkeiten aber auch Grenzen richtungsweisender ethischer Standards liegen. Interessant dabei ist die Frage, inwiefern ethische Richtlinien hilfreich, erforderlich oder hinderlich sein können – und wie mit diesem Spannungsfeld umgegangen werden kann.Methode:
Arbeit in Kleingruppen und Plenum, Einsatz audiovisueller Mittel.
