The cardinal goal of the seminar is to enhance the participants’ practical knowledge of anthropological research methods and to learn how to use these methods in practice, such as qualitative research approaches, conducting interviews, participant observation and ways of data collection. It will provide a short introduction into sports anthropology, and in particular into the ethnography of traditional ethnic sports. Focusses will be laid on these research approaches’ capacities to illuminate processes of colonization and decolonization, modernization, glocalization, construction of multiple identities, changes in body cultures, gender roles and more in and through sports. Furthermore, an overview of Kyrgyzstan´s ancient and recent history, politics, economics and insights into (the revival of) its nomadic practices and traditions will be presented.
In the following, the students will start to prepare the research for their chosen topics in small groups and give presentations on their research plans. Thus, the classroom meetings will to significant extents be devoted to thoroughly preparing the research to be carried out during the following field school in Kyrgyzstan and also to organizational matters regarding that field school and to travel arrangements for it.
