Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course´s goal is to support students in developing their skills in analyzing and interpreting data they have collected during fieldwork and in presenting the results.
Students will have the opportunity to present and discuss the qualitative data they have collected (interviews, field notes, archival and visual data, etc.) as well as how they intend to process, analyze and interpretate it. Participants must therefore have already collected data.
The course is particularly recommended to participants of the ethnographic field school at the World Nomad Games in Kyrgyzstan during the summer semester 2026. However, students who have collected qualitative date elsewhere and would like to turn them into academic texts are also welcome to join.
Over the course of the semester, the various working steps of processing ethnographic data—coding, comparing, analyzing, interpreting, creating narratives, integrating them into theoretical frameworks, and situating them within social anthropological debates—shall be discussed and, in particular, any problems addressed that may arise. Thus, work will be done on the students' actual research data. Peer feedback will be essential and required. The final results of the course activities shall be around 15-pages long texts that can serve as bases of thesis chapters or journal papers.

Assessment and permitted materials

Three partial assignments will be weighted equally in the assessment and grading:
- Reading of mandatory literature, active participation in discussions, and peer feedback;
- Oral presentation(s) of own reserach and data analysis (steps);
- Seminar paper (10 - max. 15 pages, including bibliography) that can serve as basis of a thesis chapter or journal article.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The minimum requirements are regular attendance of the classroom sessions (a maximum of two excused absences permitted) and to sufficiently accomplish the partial achievements listed in the above "Assessment" section.

Grading scale:
90-100 points: 1 (“Sehr gut” = excellent)
80-89 points: 2 (“Gut” = good)
70-79 points: 3 (“Befriedigend” = satisfactory)
60-69 points: 4 (“Genügend” = sufficient)
0-59 points: 5 (“Nicht genügend” = insufficient)

Examination topics

There will be no exams, as the course has seminar character.
For the tasks, which must be fulfilled, and the applied grading scale see above in sections "Assessment" and “Minimum requirements and assessment criteria.”

Reading list

A list of recommended literature on social anthropological research and data analysis methods will be provided in the Moodle. Dependent on the course participants´ research topics and types mandatory literature will be agreed upon as the course proceeds.
