In this semester, the seminar will take place on Tuesdsays in the late afternoon.
There will be 3 different types of sessions, on 11 (=3+3+5) days.
The idea is to have 6 long sessions (joint with ISTA and TU Wien) every two weeks, while in the 5 weeks inbetween we have somewhat shorter sessions (joint only with TU Wien).
Students should not miss at more than at 3 of the listed 11 appointments.

The following three (long) sessions will take place at ISTA (Klosterneuburg):
Tuesday, 10.03.2026 16:00-18:00 ISTA, Raiffeisen Lecture Hall
Tuesday, 21.04.2026 16:00-18:00 ISTA, Raiffeisen Lecture Hall
Tuesday, 19.05.2026 16:00-18:00 ISTA, Raiffeisen Lecture Hall

Then there are the following three (long) sessions at our faculty:
Tuesday, 24.03.2026 16.45-18:45 HS 8, OMP1, 1. Stock
Tuesday, 05.05.2026 16.45-18:45 HS 7, OMP1, 1. Stock
Tuesday, 02.06.2026 16.45-18:45 HS 8, OMP1, 1. Stock

In addition, there are the following five (slightly shorter) sessions at TU Wien:
Tuesday, 17.03.2026 16:00-17:30 Freihaus, Turm A, 8. Stock, Dissertantenzimmer
Tuesday, 14.04.2026 16:00-17:30 Freihaus, Turm A, 8. Stock, Dissertantenzimmer
Tuesday, 28.04.2026 16:00-17:30 Freihaus, Turm A, 8. Stock, Dissertantenzimmer
Tuesday, 12.05.2026 16:00-17:30 Freihaus, Turm A, 8. Stock, Dissertantenzimmer
Tuesday, 26.05.2026 16:00-17:30 Freihaus, Turm A, 8. Stock, Dissertantenzimmer

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This is the joint research seminar of the combinatorics groups of the University of Vienna and the TU Wien, where researchers (including guests) typically present their latest results on topics in discrete mathematics. It is targeted at doctoral students as well as advanced master students, who have had sufficient preparation in combinatorics courses at a master level to be able to follow scientific talks in the area.

If you are interested to attend, please register here for the mailing list (in addition to registering for the course at u:space whose link was given above): https://www.dmg.tuwien.ac.at/nfn/agdm.html

Assessment and permitted materials

Among the topics presented in the Seminar Discrete Mathematics, each student has to pick three topics and write an essay of about 8 pages for each topic that summarizes the talk and provides additional information the student has collected in complementary literature.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

While attendance is compulsory and participation in the discussions is expected, the grade is mainly determined by the quality of the essays.

Examination topics

Selected topics in Discrete Mathematics.

Reading list

In the presentations various references to suitable literature will be given.
