Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims:
Acquirement, understanding and refreshment of the basic mathematical skills in the context of analytical computational methods which are required in the initial phase of physics studies.
Application of the knowledge acquired in the lecture in mathematical examples and physical problems (solving of mathematical problems, discussion of different solutions), deepening of the lecture material.

Contents:
The most important functions and their properties, coordinate systems and vector algebra, differentiation rules, differentiation of functions and vectors, partial differentiation, integration rules, rotational bodies, calculation of arc lengths, multiple integrals, complex numbers (Cartesian representation, exponential form), differentiation of fields (grad, div and rot), integration of fields (curve and surface integrals) as well as ordinary differential equations 1st and 2nd order (linear homogeneous and inhomogeneous differential equations in the physical context, existence and uniqueness of solutions).

Method:
In the lecture part, the concepts and methods are deepened and directly applied by means of representative examples.
The exercise part of the PVU takes place in groups. Students work on calculation examples in groups (teamwork). Several teachers and a tutor are present to support the students in solving the problems in digital breakout rooms.

Assessment and permitted materials

Course with continuous assessment;
The PVU serves as preparation for the STEOP 2 module examination.
Registration for the PVU is not mandatory, but strongly recommended.

Note: With the registration for the PVU the participation is mandatory. Cancellation of this course is possible until Friday 29.10.2021 23:59. All students registered after this deadline will be graded according to the assessment criteria of the PVU.

In the course of the PVU, 3 multiple-choice online tests are performed in the exercise part (12:00-13:00) estimated on the following dates:
29.10.21
26.11.21
17.12.21.
No aids are allowed.
These tests serve exclusively to assess the PVU and are NOT included in the grade of the STEOP 2 module examination.
The proof of performance required for the entire STEOP 2 module (VO + PUE + PVU, 7 ECTS) is provided by completing the module examination.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For a positive assessment of the PVU, at least 50% of the total points (sum of the maximum number of points of the partial performances) must be achieved.
The grading key for assessment is:
Grade 1 100.00% - 87.00%
Grade 2 86.99% - 75.00%
Grade 3 74.99% - 63.00%
Grade 4 62.99% - 50.00%
Failed 49.99% - 0.00%

Examination topics

The contents of the VO and the PVU of the STEOP 2 module worked out up to the test date.
