Lecturers

Classes (iCal) - next class is marked with N

Lectures are scheduled every Monday, 10am - 11:30am during term time October 1st 2024- January 31st, 2025. Lectures take place in Seminar room 3 (Waehringer Strasse 42). The lecture takes place during winter term. In summer term, a computer practical will deepen the topics from the lecture, in particular structure refinement and model building.
Alternative to the practical course during summer term, students can take a research practical with Prof. Richter on powder X-ray diffraction. Each practical individually correspond to the practical course as part of module CH-TPA-07 of the Masters curriculum.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture aims at understanding the purpose of the crystal structure of a chemical compound, from the point of view of a chemist: what information does it provide. Central to this understanding is the description, how to carry out the diffraction experiment, and how to interpret the data and model properly. Theoretical aspects are only a minor aspect of the lecture. The lecture focusses on single crystal structures of (metal-)organic compounds. The core concepts are also relevant to mineralogists and materials scientists.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral pen-and-paper examination. Pocket calculator or books are admissible, but should not be of much use. The exam aims for understanding, more than knowing.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The examination addresses both knowledge and understanding. 50% of the questions aiming at knowledge, i.e. learning by heart of the lecture note, are sufficient to pass.

Examination topics

Contents of the lecture and of the excersises.
