Aims, contents and method of the course
A sufficient selectivity (specificity) is a prerequisite for the accuracy of analytical assays in investigations of complex mixtures and multi-component analysis. This applies in particular also for methods that are based on separation methodologies such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and capillary electrophoresis (CE) as well as mass spectrometry (MS). In this seminar molecular interaction principles and possibilities for the adjustment of selectivity in chromatographic and electrokinetic methods will be discussed. In addition, also molecular association phenomena in the gas-phase such as a mass spectrometer will be topic of this seminar. An integral part encompasses also derivatization strategies to introduce specific labels, which may trigger chemical selectivity principles.
Assessment and permitted materials
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The students should become familiar with the principles of molecular recognition and the methods for the chemical functionalization and design of separation materials. Moreover they should be aware of the widespread possibilities to exploit intermolecular associations for selectivity adjustments in separation methods.
