Aims, contents and method of the course

IMPORTANT: Programming is an important aspect of today's lab automation. It is required to take the class "VU Computational Data Processing" before this class, or to have sufficient background in Python (reading files, printing, for loops, etc.).

The lecture units give an extensive overview of the various automation methods for the chemical laboratory. Among them are microtiter plates, micro fluidics, continuous flow chemistry, lab on a chip, automated organic synthesis, specialized reaction ware, robotics, as well as self-driving labs. The advantages and disadvantages of these techniques will be discussed.

The accompanying practical unit in the chemistry lab will provide hands-on experience with flow chemistry, automated experiment design, and 3D printing technology. In addition, there will be homework assignments related to the theory lectures, in particular on optimization methods.

Assessment and permitted materials

The final grade will be composed of three equal parts, with Homework submissions, Lab protocol/presentation, and the Final MC Test each contributing 33.33% to the final score.

The final grade is calculated as the average of the points from the exercises and the final exam, according to the following scale:

50.00 - 62.49% => 4
62.50 - 74.99% => 3
75.00 - 87.49% => 2
87.50 - 100.00% => 1

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

At least 50% of the possible points must be obtained through multiple-choice tests and assignments. Additionally, a lab protocol must be submitted.
