Objectives: the course gives an overview on important physico-chemical behaviour and on the omportant techniques of investigation of solids.
Contents:
Symmetry in solids: introduction to crystallographic point groups and space groups (with tutored example calculations).
Introduction to black and white space groups (for magnetic structures)
Introduction to magnetism/susceptibility/Hund' s rules (d- and f-electron systems),
hard and soft magnets, magnetic recording.
Magnetic behaviour of 4f- and 5f- electron systems (rare earths and actinoids)
Introduction to Thermoelectrics (Seebeck, Peltier/Thomson Effect, Figure of merit (ZT), TE- efficiency for conversion of heat into electricity, novel high ZT thermoelectric materials with high TE-efficiency, nanotechnology)
