Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the course is to gain a basic understanding of general topics in biology, with particular attention to molecular biological aspects.
Introduction: The ten greatest discoveries in biology
Cell biology: structure, structure and function of cells and cell compartments, function of membrane proteins, transport and cellular communication
Genetics: the cell cycle, mitosis, the Mendelian gene concept and the chromosomes meiosis and sexual reproduction, epigenetics;
Developmental biology: General principles and the example of the model organisms Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans;
Evolutionary biology: genome evolution, Darwin's theory of natural selection evolution of populations and emergence of species;
Cancer: Molecular basis of cancer development.

Assessment and permitted materials

Due to the Covid-19 measures, the exam will be held in SS 2020 in digital form provided in Moodle: 6 questions in text form, each 5 points.
