Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Students know how to analyze the chemical variability of minerals and mineral associations using algebraic methods. They understand rocks as thermodynamic systems and can interpret element distributions in terms of genetic significance. In the accompanying exercises they acquired competence in the treatment of analytical data. The students know the systematics of magmatic and metamorphic rocks in the geodynamic context and they can deduce the basics rock rock-forming processes from the mineralogical and chemical composition of rocks.

Part A: In a first part an introduction into the theoretical basis well be presented together with applications.
Stoichiometry: writing stochiometric reaction equations, calculation of modal mineral proportions from bulk chemical composition, calculation of normative mineral content, reading phase diagrams
Thermodynamics: Application of geo-thermobarometry, element distribution, understanding phase diagrams and phase diagram projections
Kinetics: basic understanding of mineral chemical zoning and reaction microstructures

In parts B and C the basic petrological concepts will be applied to metamorphic and magmatic rocks.
