Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is split into two major topics: inorganic and organic contaminants.

The inorganic section will involve the production, emission and environmental behavior of major trace metals as mercury, lead, cadmium and arsenic. Concepts of distribution of trace metal concentrations, transport, speciation, analysis and environmental effects will be presented and discussed. Bioavailability and uptake into the food chain will be elaborated on examples of the free ion activity and the biotic ligand models. The role of complexation (especially by natural organic matter) and adsorption as well as the influence of water chemistry including redox gradients will be presented.

The organic section will involve the chemical structure, phase transport processes, transport, degradation, and risk assessment of organic contaminants in the environment. Types of organic contaminants, their analysis and case studies of pollution will be discussed.

Assessment and permitted materials

Inorganic contaminants (50%):
25% written exam, 45 min. on 08 January 2020; 25% presentation of a scientific paper or report on dates agreed with the students during course hours, 20 min. presentation time plus questions.

Organic contaminants (50%):
40% oral presentation on dates agreed with students, 15 min. presentation time plus questions.
10% exercises to be handed in by 6 December 2020

The grading scheme is as follows:
> 87% (1); 75-86 % (2); 63-74 % (3); 50-62 % (4); < 50 % (5)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The students know the hydrochemical behavior of the important inorganic compounds in the water cycle, they are familiar with the concept of speciation and the aquatic thermodynamics. They know the important redox systems as well as the basics of transport phenomena. The can recall classes of contaminants, their sources, transport and distribution as well as their predominant sinks. They know the substance specific behavior of relevant pollutants and can describe the different environmental hazards arising from pollution. Important analytical techniques are known
