Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Introduction to radiation in the atmosphere; Role of radiation in the weather and climate system; Short-/Longwave radiation; Transmission and emission of the atmosphere; Absorption by gases; Energy equilibrium of the atmosphere; Radiation transfer equation; Optical phenomena in the atmosphere (e.g., rainbows, noctilucent clouds).

Assessment and permitted materials

lecture: written exam
exercises: handing in and discussion of exercises
student presentations: outreach talk of a chosen topic (list of topics will be provided) - form of presentation to be decided (oral presentation, video, or poster)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Exercises – 25%
Presentation – 25%
Mini-Exam – 10% (25.04.2024)
Final exam – 40% (27.06.2024)

Examination topics

Written exam: entire content of the lecture and exercise classes.
Exercises: The exercises cover examples from the lecture and are a preparation for the exam.
Presentation: Explaining a difficult topic to a broader non-scientific audience.
