Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The goal of the course is to introduce the basic ideas of exploration seismology, mainly the reflection method. The students will learn about the differences between the basic research seismology and applied techniques for exploration. Theoretical ideas will be followed by practical examples and recepies how to process the data. The lecture will be also complemented by the excersise based mainly on using Seismic Unix package.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral examination, no materials permitted.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

General understanding of various methods and techniques for exploration seismic data acquisition and processing. Students need to answer at least 50% of the questions (4 - 6 questions) correctly to pass the exam.

Examination topics

seismic equipment (especialy differences to basic research seismology)
ray propagation in layered media: reflection / refraction
reflection / refraction techniques of exploration (assumptions, differences, equipment)
common shot gather
common receiver gather
common midpoint gather + zero offset section
data preprocessing techniques (deconvolution, filtering, ...)
normal moveout correction
migration
