Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course accompanies the writing of the Bachelor's thesis in the field of astronomy and astrophysics. The languages of instruction are English and German.

Procedure:
- Participants must choose a topic for their Bachelor's thesis at the beginning of the semester or before. Topics should be defined in a personal discussion with a professor, postdoc, or advanced PhD candidate. A topic is considered accepted once the supervisor has registered the student via Moodle.
- Regular, individually arranged meetings with the supervisor are foreseen for the remainder of the semester.
- The accompanying tutorial supports students in writing the thesis and in preparing the oral presentation.
- At least one draft of the written thesis must be sent to the supervisor before the final submission.
- The final presentations take place in small groups.

Course objectives:
- Participants are able to independently acquire knowledge on a clearly defined research question.
- Participants are able to carry out independent analyses of data, literature, and other material.
- Participants are able to describe their own research within a broader context and to distinguish it from existing research results.
- Participants are able to interpret their results in a logically consistent manner and to compare and discuss them with other results.
- Participants are able to formulate the steps required to obtain further results.
- Participants are able to present their research in written form according to current scientific standards, and orally in the final presentation of the thesis.

Assessment and permitted materials
