Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims: Deeper understanding of galaxy properties in the local universe.
Content: Galaxy types and galaxy properties, galaxy groups and clusters, galaxy interactions, stellar populations.
Methods: lectures and poster presentations

Assessment and permitted materials

Mulitple-Choice exam in last lecture week, paper presentations in the exercise groups, attendence. No tools are allowed for the exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The final grade is computed as follows:
60% exam (Grade 1-5, grading scheme is shown below). To successfully complete the lecture it is mandatory to pass the exam (i.e. grade 4 or better).
40% presentations in exercise groups in teams of 2-3 students each; grades 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3 or 5.
Attendence: missing more than two exercise groups without excuse results in downgrading by one step for each missed exercise group.
Contributions to all parts of VU are necessary. We will conduct a 2nd exam only for students who failed to pass the 1st exam, probably end of September.
Grading scheme for exam:
below 50% -> grade 5
50% - 62.499% -> grade 4
62.5% - 74.999% -> grade 3
75% - 87.499% -> grade 2
87.5% - 100% -> grade 1
