Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Habitability is a broad and highly interdisciplinary field, combining aspects of astronomy, physics, chemistry, geology, climate science, and biology. During this seminar, each student will have the opportunity to formulate and investigate their own research question related to habitability, such that the specific topics discussed throughout the semester will be determined by student interests.

The program for this semester is split into two parts.

We start with formulating some individual research questions within the context of habitability. Students will then read and present peer-reviewed research papers targeting their individual science questions. The style of presentations of the papers will vary throughout this course.

For the second part of the semester, each student will give a final presentation based on their research question and their chosen papers.

Each student will have an advisor and students are expected to discuss their paper selection and presentation details with their advisor prior to presenting to the rest of the class.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral presentation on the selected topic, participation in discussions

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Graded:
- Final presentation
Ungraded, but deduction if not met:
- 75% attendance of all classes
- communicate with the topic advisor about the paper selection and the presentation itself
- presentations on three peer-reviewed papers
- participation in discussions (incl. asking questions)

Examination topics

Will be announced in the course

Reading list

The students are expected to find papers on the topic of their chosen science question by themselves.
