Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Objectives:
Students know the basic concepts of the geography of rural areas. They are able to apply these and understand current trends, challenges and possible solutions for the different types of rural areas. The basis for this is the analysis of peripheral and non-center rural areas in Europe and especially in Austria. Common metrics and case studies are discussed in depth.

Contents:
Lecture 01: Introduction: A roadmap for the semester
Lecture 02: Typologies: from the rural space to rural spaces
Lecture 03: Settlement structures and land use: from the traditional village to the single-family home
Lecture 04: Demographic and social change: between decline and growth
Lecture 05: Historical and contemporary migration movements: from countryside to city (and back again?)
Lecture 06: Economic spaces: development pathways and how they change or disappear
Lecture 07: Entrepreneurial and social innovation: new opportunities for rural areas
Lecture 08: The car, discontinued branch railways, and empty buses: mobility requirements from youth and seniors
Lecture 09: From mountain farming villages to mass tourism: opportunities and overtourism
Lecture 10: Broadband expansion and data centers in the greenfield: what kind of digitalization for rural areas?
Lecture 11: Is this still housing, or can it go? Subsidy programs between aspiration and reality
Lecture 12: Outlook: theses on the future development of rural areas

Method:
Lecture by the course leader (including deep dives), mentimeter surveys, guest lectures, think-pair-share formats

Assessment and permitted materials

Offline multiple-choice exam. Exam dates:
1. Exam date: January 21, 2026 – 3:00–4:00 PM
2. Exam date: February 25, 2026 – 3:00–4:00 PM
3. Exam date: End of June 2026
4. Exam date: End of September / Beginning of October 2026

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

In the multiple-choice examination, at least half of the possible points must be achieved to successfully complete the course. Grading scale:
43.75 to < 50.00 – Very Good (1)
37.50 to < 43.75 – Good (2)
31.25 to < 37.50 – Satisfactory (3)
25.00 to < 31.25 – Sufficient (4)
00.00 to < 25.00 – Insufficient (5)

Additionally, it is possible to collect up to five bonus points during the semester through voluntary extra assignments (five tasks, each worth one point). These bonus points are added to the points achieved in the exam. Thus, a maximum of 55 points can be reached during the semester.

Please note:
- Bonus points can improve the final grade by at most one grade level.
- The best grade can also be achieved without bonus points.
- Bonus points alone are not sufficient to successfully complete the course.

Examination topics

The examination material is based on the lecture slides that are made available to the students. These are supplemented by papers or book chapters that are shared via the learning platform.
