Aims, contents and method of the course

Based on examples participants will learn how the use the often complex tools of geographic information systems by using a desktop GIS (ArcView). Focus is laid on how to prepare existent data for the use in a GIS (e.g. combine geometry and statistical data) and visualize them in a cartographic way.

5. Edition, addition and calculation of attributes
6. Legend styles and classification methods
7. Data aggregation applying summarize and dissolve function
8. Design and edition of map symbols
9. Main map vs overview map
10. Map layout, its features and generation in GIS
11. Map preparation for other software

Assessment and permitted materials

first examination at the beginn of the second unit;
second examination at the beginn of the third unit;

Final project: deadline according to moodle-platform

There is no alternative date for missed examinations.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The final mark is composed of 15% active corporation (50% presence, 50% active participation), semester project (as a group, 25%) and the tests at the beginning of the 2nd and 3rd unit (each 30%).
