Basics of the Austrian and International Monetary and Financial Systems

Target
The aim of the lecture is the basic understanding of the economic significance of money and finance. The topic relates not only to the science of economy, but also to other fields. Thus it has to be structured: in the nature and value of money, of production of money and its supply, in the presentation of the existing setups necessary for the function of monetary systems as well as in the conditions forming a frame for monetary matters. Students are expected to be able both to define key-terms dealt with for example in the media and to acquire knowledge for their individual relationship to entities of the financial sector.
Contents
Basic: In connection with the different aspects of money and its value this chapter deals with the history of economy, the different appearances of money and to the actual technical production of it (Striking of coins, printing of banknotes). This part also illustrates procedures of money supply and monetary policy.
Relating to the creation of money this chapter gives a description of economic aspects; as to transactions carried out by banks or by other financial service providers it turns to aspects of business administration. The main part will explain the definition and give a listing of what has to be considered as a financial service and which providers are comprised.
Overlapping of different topics is strong in this part: It deals not only with legal norms, but also with accounting, with international financial institutions and with a comment on the EURO.
