Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

During the course, examples for growing and declining cities will be analyzed as well as the reasons and consequences of these processes. Due to the actuality of the topic, the participants will also have to focus on the causes of financial and housing crisis and its impact on US-American cities.
This course is followed by a field-trip to the USA during ealry summer term (app. 12.-23.3.2016). Current route: Chicago - Detroit - New York City.

Assessment and permitted materials

- complete active participation (20%)
- group presentation on one academic topic + development of academic walk on this topic (40%)
- reality check of academic walk in the US + finalisation in terms of content and online visualisation (40%)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- Identifying and embedding the differences between US-American and European cities
- Understanding urban development processes at different scales
- Articulation of identified characteristics and processes in the context of academic research
- Compiling an academic excursion guide (online; optional: print)
- Understanding and applying English terminology
- Self-organisation and orientation in (unknown) environment

Examination topics

Successul selection for excursion:
The selection for participation is based on two steps:
1. Project/Place/People-to-Meet (in English):
Please select one of our proposed cities and suggest a specific project, place or scholars you would be interested to meet. Explain the relevancy of this visit with regard to urban studies and try to link it to a theoretical framework (max. 1 page; to be submitted 1 week before individual conversation)
2. Individual conversation:
in English; 5 minutes; date and time: tbd
3. Valid ID which needs to be valid 6 months after the end of the excursion

Before excursion:
- Complete participation in proseminar
- Analysis and presentation of one particular research topic (in group)
- Suggestion for an academic walking tour in one of our excursion-cities based on the research topic (definition of site-stops including academic explanation)

During excursion:
- Active participation and engagement
- “Reality check” and refinement of proposed academic walking-tour
- Group commitment, self-organization and reliability

After excursion:
- Adjustment of finalized academic walking tour (venues and content)
- Preparation of text and visualization (pictures, maps, links, social media)
- Online implementation
